473 President Street

If you hear “Gowanus” and think “industrial wasteland,” you’ll be totally wrong. Knotel’s outpost in Gowanus, itself big and suited to creative industries, is flanked by some of Brooklyn’s best bars and restaurants. Lavendar Lake will be the happy hour go-to, while Pig Beach, Insa, and Freek’s Mill will keep everyone full.

About the Area

The age of the hipster has passed, leaving in its wake a borough full of neighborhoods with wildly different characters. Go to Williamsburg for the polished vibe you might have once expected from Manhattan, or Gowanus for an industrial feel where more and more under-the-radar restaurants are popping up. You can barely bike a block without finding a brewery (like the excellent Threes and Other Half), cocktail bar, $1 oyster happy hour, or independent shop offering the cool and strange. There are still places to find hints of the old Brooklyn, too, like dive Greenpoint Tavern on Bedford Avenue and the mini–Little Italy of Carroll Gardens.
